Nigeria, Philippines trade volume jumped to $221 million in 2024: Envoy
The Philippines’ Ambassador to Nigeria, Mersole Mellejor, has announced a significant increase in trade volume between the two countries—from $47 million in 2023 to $221 million in 2024. This surge is largely attributed to Nigeria's export of liquefied natural gas (LNG), particularly methane, which now accounts for over 90% of Philippine imports from Nigeria. The envoy praised this energy partnership, noting that it supports the Philippines’ growing energy needs.
Speaking during the 127th Philippine Independence Day celebration in Abuja, Mellejor also encouraged business partnerships between Filipino and Nigerian companies, especially in areas like sustainable public transportation and consumer goods manufacturing. He highlighted the long-standing presence of Filipinos in Nigeria, with about 4,000 individuals contributing across sectors such as oil and gas, education, hospitality, and healthcare.
He expressed appreciation for Nigeria’s hospitality and cited a report naming it the 7th friendliest country in the world for foreigners. Meanwhile, about 10,000 Nigerians currently study in the Philippines, further strengthening educational and cultural ties.
Aduke Ogunmilua of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs echoed the sentiment of shared values and cooperation between the two nations. She emphasized the growing partnership built on trade, education, and a joint commitment to global peace and sustainable development. The event also featured traditional Filipino dances and a raffle draw to celebrate the enduring friendship between the countries.
